Word Trip: "Ligtening" vs "Lightning"

Saw this


from a hilarious YouTube video,



which got me curious if "lightening" and "lightning" were similar to "color" and "colour", "grey" and "gray".

When I Wiki-ed "lightening", I was directed to the Lightning page. But being a scientist, I needed to check my guess at least one more time. So I checked the Wiktionary,

lightening
1. Present participle of lighten.


And for a more solid evidence that "lightening" was not used properly,
